What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is a condition that, in short, means that a person can't sleep through natural means, even though they might feel tired. Typically, a person will be up for days and nights at a time.  They will find that they will either not experience sleep, or they won't be able to stay asleep through the night.  They will find that they will wake up constantly, and not be able to experience sleep for a definitive amount of time.

This condition affects millions of people at some point or the other in their lives.  There are a couple of types of insomnia.  There is the type that is due to situational causes.  Maybe a person has had an exciting day or an event in their lives that keeps their adrenaline levels going, and they can't sleep. Or maybe a person has taken in a stimulant, such as caffeine, or unfortunately, illicit drugs.  These things will prevent a person from going to sleep.  But for some people, they might have a chemical imbalance, or a hormonal imbalance that is keeping them from getting any sleep.  When this happens, they will have chronic insomnia.

Insomnia is a miserable condition for the person suffering from it. There is nothing more excruciating than wanting to experience sleep, and feeling sleepy, yet not being able to fall into deep and restorative sleep.

The person who suffers from insomnia will feel anxious at first. The anxiety will make sure that they won't be able to get any sleep. The anxiety will turn into agitation and frustration. A person might find themselves tossing and turning in frustration of not being able to sleep, and trying in vain to find a comfortable position to try to get some sleep. Because of this, not only will they be groggy and miserable the next day, but they will experience other physical symptoms because of insomnia.

The person who suffers from insomnia will find that they will suffer with aches and pains. The muscles don't get a chance to rest, and to restore themselves. The insomniac might find that they have digestive disorders also. They will certainly suffer with mood disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and anger. The body needs restorative sleep, and it needs at the very least 7 hours of restorative sleep.

There are many body functions that only happen during the sleep cycle. The body gets rid of certain toxins, and rebuilds healthy cells and fluids when the body is in a state of deep sleep. Metabolism, and digestion is at a peak during the sleep cycle. If the body isn't getting enough sleep, then these natural body functions can't take place. The body will be helpless to protect itself against infection, and will be run down.

There are things that a person can do to relieve their insomnia. The first line of defense that doctors prescribe, is for an insomniac to pay attention to their sleep hygiene habits.

This means making sure that the room is set up for sleep. Use soft lighting, and turn off the TV. Maybe keep a book by the bed so that you can read. Reading gives the mind a focus if you are having a hard day, and it helps to soothe the mind to prepare it for sleep. Make sure that the room is at a comfortable temperature. It's recommended that the room temperature is a little cooler than normal. This is because most people become hot during the sleep cycle. Again, the body is metabolizing. This metabolic cycle creates heat.

Natural Remedies for Insomnia

There are some natural remedies for insomnia. A person can drink some warm milk as the first line of defense.

Also, if you have some turkey meat around, you can eat a few slices. The turkey has a chemical in it that encourages sleep.

Everyone has heard of the wonders of chamomile tea. Chamomile is a type of flower that is brewed for its tranquilizing and relaxing qualities. It's very common to find chamomile tea at grocery stores as a matter of fact.

Another type of tea that is good for sleep, is Rooibos, or African Red tea. It has tranquilizing qualities as well, and can help a person experience a deeper sleep cycle.

For something a bit stronger and effective, there are natural products, such as the valerian root. Valerian root is a natural herb that the drug Valium is based upon. It's a tranquilizer, and it's very effective for bringing upon sleep, and can be a good aid in making sure someone stays asleep.

There is also melatonin. Melatonin is hormone that is produced by glands in the body. However, this hormonal chemical is only produced in dark conditions. But even though it might be dark outside, some people don't naturally produce melatonin. This is the hormone that we need in our bloodstreams to go to sleep. So, a person can buy pill versions of this hormone over the counter. They can add this to their daily intake, and they should be able to get help with sleep in this way.
